Discover Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)

A supportive blend of medicine and therapy designed to foster deeper insights and lasting relief for those facing persistent mental health challenges.

What Is KAP?

KAP is an emerging therapeutic method that pairs low-dose ketamine with guided psychotherapy to help individuals achieve quicker breakthroughs and sustained improvements in mood and well-being. Originally used as an anesthetic, ketamine is now recognized for its potential in addressing mental health when combined with professional talk therapy. In my practice, I handle the therapeutic side, partnering with Journey Clinical's medical experts who manage eligibility, prescriptions, and monitoring for safe, effective care.

How Does KAP Work?

Ketamine influences brain receptors to promote neural flexibility, potentially forming new connections that support emotional healing. This creates a temporary shift in awareness, allowing access to deeper thoughts, emotions, and patterns that traditional therapy might take longer to reach. Sessions involve a relaxed state where you can explore inner experiences, followed by integration to apply insights to daily life. In my approach, we use sublingual lozenges (dissolved under the tongue) for a gentle, controlled experience lasting about 45 minutes.

The KAP Process

We tailor each journey to your needs with these key steps:
  1. Initial Evaluation: A virtual medical consult with Journey Clinical to review your health history, discuss KAP, and determine if it's right for you. If eligible, they'll create a personalized plan and provide lozenges with usage guidance.
  2. Preparation Sessions: 1-2 therapy meetings with me to set intentions, explain what to expect, and build comfort.
  3. Dosing Sessions: Up to 3 hours, in-person (Lacey, WA) or via telehealth. You'll take the lozenge in a calm setting (reclined, with optional eye mask and music), while I provide supportive presence.
  4. Integration Sessions: Follow-up therapy to process experiences, uncover meanings, and plan next steps; typically 2-4 sessions per dosing cycle.
  5. Ongoing Monitoring: Quarterly check-ins with Journey Clinical to track progress and adjust as needed.
Sessions adapt to your pace, blending calm guidance with your unique goals.

Who is KAP for?

KAP may suit adults dealing with treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic stress, or life transitions where standard therapies haven't fully helped. It's not for everyone, Journey Clinical assesses medical/psychiatric history to ensure safety. Ideal candidates are stable, motivated for self-exploration, and without contraindications like active psychosis, severe heart/respiratory issues, or substance misuse history. A free phone consult with me can help explore if it is a fit.

Risks & Considerations

While KAP is generally well-tolerated under professional supervision, potential side effects include temporary dissociations (feeling detached), mild nausea, dizziness, elevated blood pressure/heart rate, or changes in perception. Less common risks involve respiratory slowing, urinary discomfort, or mood shifts. at-home use without monitoring increases overdose or misuse potential, which is why we partner with Journey Clinical for oversight. It's avoided in those with certain conditions (e.g., schizophrenia, addiction history). Always discuss concerns during your evaluation. Safety is our priority.

Costs & Insurance

Therapy fees for preparation, dosing, and integration are private pay (contact me for rates) or may qualify for out-of-network reimbursement. Medical costs through Journey Clinical (e.g., consults, prescriptions) are outlined on their site (visit JourneyClinical.com/patients for details). I'm an in-network KAP provider with Enthea for eligible plans.
